THE CHURCH OF SAINTE MARIE DU MERCADAL IN CASTELNOU

Before entering the village of Castelnou, make a small detour to the Eglise Sainte-Marie du Mercadal, located just outside the village fortifications.
This religious building owes its name to the market that once stood there. The construction of this church began at the beginning of the 13th century, but it underwent several renovations in the 18th century.
At that time, the small castle chapel could no longer accommodate the entire population, hence the decision to build this church.
